The Hub Is Getting Closer To Being A Reality!

Cllr King spoke of The Hub and how close the plans were to getting to the Planning Panel. There has been an extensive amount of time used to consult on the internal layout to accommodate all the communities in the area and to work within the projected budget some external design features have had to be looked at again. Councillor King stressed, “This is still got to be a landmark, a statement of building design that enhances the immediate area but also tells the people of Broughton there is a place to house their different and changing community needs over the next half a century”.

There have been discussions relating to security and the ‘perceived fear’ of increased ‘anti-social behaviour’ in the area’ when the Hub is opened. Specific ‘design against crime’ in the designing of the Hub and it’s surrounding area means that this is not foreseen to cause further delay in it’s development. here will be a meeting of the three Councillors, Architects and Officers’ from Urban Vision later this month to ensure they are up to date with the existing proposals before plans are submitted to the Planning Panel.

Protecting Our Heritage

262 Great Clowes Street was back on the Planning Panel’s agenda this past month. The Developer applied for partial demolition of this Villa.

Other interested people joined Cllr Jim King and members of the Broughton Labour Party on a site visit to get additional reassurances of the developer’s intention to include this Villa in their plans for this site.

Councillor Jim King affirmed, “It is equally important to welcome new Broughtonians to Salford and work with our existing heritage.” With reassurance from the developer the application was accepted by the Panel and now goes forward for Home Office approval

Late Broughton Mayor Honoured

The late Cllr Bernard Murphy was recently houred for his 25yrs service as a School Governor at The Cathedral School of SS Peter and John RC Primary School and at St Thomas of Canterbury. His wife, Cllr Jane Murphy, presented an achievement Cup to the schools which will be awarded to a pupil each year who makes an outstanding contribution to the community life of the school at St Peter and Johns and for achievement in communication skill at St Thomas.

Jane felt privileged to be able to present the cups at the school prize days to a courageous Y3 boy who does not let severe ill health stand in his way of making his school a better place and to a Y6 young man for outstanding communication skill amongst his peers.

The schools wanted the cups to mirror something of Bernard’s character and contribution to community life in the awards. There was certainly plenty of laughter and smiles on the day and the young men a delight to meet.

Housing Achievements

This week Salix Homes has confirmed they will seriously consider

  • Using legal measures to quicken the eviction of bad tenants
  • Take legal action against people or organisations providing false references for housing
  • Offer residents a bigger say on allocations criteria for their communities.

Cllr McIntyre says, “ People want more say and control of their streets and neighbourhoods. Hopefully this commitment will be another step towards just that.”
