Brighton – Leaders speech

It was the day that Gordon Brown was due to make his speech. The hall was packed and the press were in a frenzy to get last minute access to the event, but if you did not have a ticket already, there was no chance. It was worth the wait, the crowd erupted in applause as we were reminded how far we have come and what we stand to lose if a Tory government comes to power.

What we have to offer was made clear, a social care for all, a steady recovery plan, and no compulsory ID cards. in Gordon’s own words the difference is now very clear, “because there is a difference between the parties, it is the difference between conservatives who embrace pessimism and austerity and progressives like Labour who embrace prosperity and hope.”

Brighton – Blood and bones

Yesterday was a very intense day, with Alister Darling setting out the economic climate and the strong positive Labour plan to get back on track. There was NO doubt in every-one’s mind that the country would be in a worse state under the ‘DO NOTHING’ policies of the Tories.

Peter Mandleson speech motivated an already determined party faithful in which he declared the Labour party was in his blood and in his bones. He also announced the extending of the scrappage scheme to cars AND VANS which has been so successful the allocation has already ran out.

Later in the day at a woman’s fringe meeting Harriet Harman spoke out against the Tories and the woefully inadequate polices around equality. Labour reaffirmed it belief in equal opportunities for all. Turning to Europe she made it clear that the euro Tories are a shame to this country. They have only one woman in the European parliament. They have aligned themselves with some of the most right wing groups in Europe. The voting record is a roll of shame.
Tories on making a crime of rape in marriage – AGAINST!
Tories on banning the circumcision of females – AGIANST.

Today the highlight will be the prime ministers speech and I hope to report on that tomorrow.

Brighton – Against all odds.

last night at the North West Delegates fringe meeting Gordon Brown spoke to the gathered members. He thanked us all for our hard work and then pointed out that we are going to have a hard fight on our hands to expose the Tories.

Taking up David Cameron’s challenge “If you want to know what a Conservative government would look like then look to our Conservative councils.” The prime minister will distribute a dossier on these councils which shows many of the shameful things they do compared to a Labour council.

The prime minster finished the speech with a rousing call to all member to remember the following:

The trade unions were founded against the odds.
The Labour party was elected in the 1920’s against the odds.
Again in 1945 the party was elected against the odds.
The NHS was founded against the odds.
After section 28 the civil partnerships was passed against the odds.

We will win the next election…..AGAINST ALL ODDS!

Labour in Brighton

It is a bright and sunny day here in Brighton. This reflects the mood of the delegates. After a long period of attacks from all sides, The party is getting ready to come out fighting and expose the two faced Tories.

Last night we listened to a rousing speech from John Prescott on the GO FO(u)RTH campaign. Tonight there are lots of fringe meetings where the theme is exposing Tories, campaigning and tooling up the party faithful to take the message out there. If the opposition and the media think we are down and out, they better think again.

Check back again tomorrow for another report from Brighton.
